Pamela Atwood ~ Special Guest

~Introducing special guest blogger today Pamela Atwood~
~Gerontologist Certified Dementia Practitioner~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Have you heard of the Daily Happiness Checklist by Dr. Timothy Sharp and the Happiness Institute? I use it every day– some days I veer off course, but usually it helps. The first affirmation is “I’ve reminded myself of my life purpose.” I’m one of the lucky folks with a well defined life purpose. I work every day to make a difference in the lives of people living with cognitive and neurological disorders. I’m blessed to be supported by family, friends and colleagues who encourage my learning and my vision: listening to people and creating systems that can meet their needs. How cool is that? I’m a gerontologist by training, and when people ask me what that is, my response is “I geek out about aging.” Why? My great-grandmother died at age 99, and she said, “Pamela, don’t ever grow old – it’s JUST-NO-FUN.”  I knew my life purpose was to make that untrue.
               One of my favorite things to do is to teach. I am a professional speaker and love going to other cities and teach using techniques that are uncommon in healthcare education (usually with a red nose and real-life stories). I speak about unusual topics (bullying in senior communities; intimacy and sexuality and aging; laughter therapy; using Improv to communicate with people with dementia). I love learning from my colleagues about their experiences too.
               My other joy is learning from my clients. As a Dementia Care Consultant, I get to spend time with families. My job is to cut their learning curve (which I do, substantially) and make them confident caregivers – but I get something out of it too. I also direct a “Forgetfulness-Friendly” choir, self-named Noteworthy Voices. I learn from my elders all the time. From Enid, I learned how to care for African Violets. From Ivan, I learned about the Hartford Whalers after-hours (he had a bar) and how to create a life after being a Jewish POW in Nazi Germany. From Jack, I’ve learned that having a fun personality gets you out of a lot of trouble, even if it annoys your kids. From Madelyn I’ve learned memories are tethered to music. From Molly, I’ve learned to take care of yourself as a Caregiver, because if you don’t, you may be paralyzed by a stroke and have to learn to function gracefully and with dignity – but it can be done. I’ve been given more than I could ever give. And I do it in the memory and honor of my family members who have lived with dementia and Parkinson’s – Lottie, Nell, Elaine, Pat, Dorothy.
               And yet, I cannot wait to be out of work. When our systems change, and stigma is a memory, and diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s are cured, I’ll rest. Until then, I will continue to volunteer with the American Parkinson Disease Association (www.ctapda.org) and the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org/ct) and continue to educate Caregivers and everyone who is “aging” (www.youtube.com/Pamela_Atwood) (www.AgingCareAcademy.org). And I’ll work to make it FUN!
"The Path"
When Jan submitted this tangle for the blog, this is what she told me, "The Path is not always clear, and often filled with serendipity." What a positive way to look at the crossroads in our life!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My new book launched in April on Amazon ~  "The Artistry of Caregiving, Letters to Inspire Your Caregiver Journey"  Written from my heart to yours, to help you navigate the emotional journey of caring for another. The book has a unique format. Six chapters and 33 Letters, designed to read on the go, in no particular order. I wrote this book out my experience as my Mom's primary Caregiver for several years. My journey was difficult, stressful, lonely and I felt very isolated and withdrawn. I wrote this to bring comfort to Caregivers of all ages. I wanted to let you know you are not alone, you are understood and I hope this book makes you feel connected, appreciated and affirms all that you do. Caregiving is not an easy job. It can be quite demanding and stressful. I created this book to be a companion for you and I hope you love it!

The paperback edition will be out in July, stay tuned.

~The Heartstrings Of Love~

I am a Caregiver
by Lin M. Watkins

I am a caregiver
it’s what I do.
24/7, I’m here for you.

And most of the time
we do just fine
But once in a while,
I need my own time.

And when I take
that necessary break
I’ve got to remember
it’s for both our sake.

I can’t take care of you
unless I take care of me.
So I work very hard
at being guilt-free.

I’ll always be here for you,
so don’t you fret.
Together we’re making
memories of us I’ll never forget.

A Caregiver’s Treasure Book

by Cyndie Goins Hoelscher

Caregiver,
in case someone hasn’t mentioned it,
you are a treasure – radiant, precious and rare.
You care,
bestowing your gifts in a time
when the world may not seem so bright or pretty.
You are treasured
as highly as the diamonds, rubies, and sapphires
precious gems in this world.
These jewels,
rarely recognized in their natural state,
are cut, faceted and polished,
until they sparkle for the whole world to admire.
Like these stones, caregivers shine.
And when the world may not seem so pretty,
remember this gift – a treasure box
to keep in your secret place,
so you will be reminded time and time again
of how priceless you truly are.

The two Zentangle designs in this blog were created by my sister Jan Steinle. I asked her to send me two of her favorite tangles that she made recently and why she liked them. Here are her comments:

"I love the simplicity and symmetry" in the first one and the second one: "I love the movement in this one." What I see and what she sees are rarely the same thing and with abstract art that is very common. No matter how we each see it, we both see something beautiful.

I hope you find something to do that is creative - a craft, a hobby, coloring, painting, planting flowers or any number of creative outlets. Creating is a great buffer to life's trials and tribulations. Whatever you do, enjoy it!

~Home Sweet Home~

I've been thinking about what Home Sweet Home means to me lately since midlife is a transitional time for so many. In the past, many and maybe even most people stayed in the same city they grew up in for the remainder of their life. In the last several years that has changed. Our children often move out of state or just far enough away that we have to plan a visit. Sometimes that is cost prohibitive because the cost incurred securing a round trip flight is expensive. We rejoice if we can fit in a visit once or twice a year.

Home truly is where the heart is. No matter where I am, no matter where I'm living, my home sweet home has nothing to do with my belongings. It has everything to do with my accumulated memories since childhood. I cherish and guard those with all my heart.

Our memories comprise who we are and how we live our life. We are the sum total of all of our life experiences. In this day and age, I never take for granted that I still have my memories. Next time you are feeling alone, withdrawn and isolated, use your memory to pull you out of that funk and focus on your memories that bring you joy. Giving thanks sheds a light on our circumstances and puts them in their proper place. We are not our circumstances. We are not our status in our personal or professional life. We have the ability daily to sustain, no matter what is happening in our life. For that, let us give thanks.

~Now You See It, Now You Don't~

When Jan made this tangle I loved it. She created this early on in our discovery of Zentangle Inspired Art in the summer of 2014. At the time, I knew that her initials were embedded in this design and it was very obvious to me then. JB is for Jan Barbara. I hadn't looked at it in several months and chose it for this blog because I think the design is so dynamic. Of course, I think all her tangles are great and am happy to post any tangle she creates.

I was looking at this design with her last night and she said, "You know my initials are in that, right?" And I realized then I had completely forgotten that and it looked like an abstract design to me. We had a good laugh and then chatted about what you see is not always what is. That thought can carry over to so many things in life, not just art.

This experience made me pause and realize how much I take for granted as I make observations about everything in my life, everyday. After this experience, I will be paying closer attention to my perception of things. Being observant, looking at details and understanding that our perception has everything to do with how we move through life.

Just because we see things a certain way, that doesn't necessarily mean that's the truth.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a recent tangle I made. Halfway through I didn't like it, but persevered to the end because I was determined to make it look like I had originally envisioned. What I had envisioned, like every tangle I do, is a final design that I love. Not every single design is a success or my favorite, but with that attitude, I do like many of the ones I have completed. And for the few I haven't completed, I will come back to you at a later date, with fresh eyes, and set out again to design something I am happy to look at. I never, ever give up. And I never shoot for perfection. I enjoy the process and the benefits of doing something creative that I love.
~Relaxed Focus~
My sister and partner, Jan Steinle, made this Zentangle Inspired Art design recently and she was explaining to me how she went through the process of this beautiful tangled creation. Now that she is a CZT (Certified Zentangle Teacher) she breaks it down in such a way that it gives meaning to how she went about creating what she did. I thought I'd share that with you. Here is what she told me:
"This is a very basic pattern, (the checkerboard, called Knightsbridge, one of the earlier official patterns from the founders) that I teach in Intro to Zentangle classes, but I applied it to/used it to fill in another pattern (Scrolled Feather). So I used an 'old' pattern in a 'new' way. I slowed down to take my time to fill in all the little black squares as a 'meditative/relaxation exercise' rather than hurry thru it to get it done. It was the 'process' that was important, not the pattern! Lesson - be mindful of the moment, find the positive, be present, enjoy the process for what it is. (Relaxed focus)"
Next time you feel like you're in a rut or you're feeling stagnant or you feel like you're just going through the motions, think about what one or two small changes (or big changes) will do for your life experience.
Self love starts with the basics - what can I do to improve my career path or a situation that is bothering me or gnawing at me and look for the results. The results will show up in ways you may not have imagined. As soon as you shift you're thinking, doors will open. Being proactive for a change is a powerful way to live. My best to you in making a positive difference in your own life.
~A Caregiver's Attention To Detail~
I was reminded once again this past week how important it is to pay attention to details and small changes in someone's health you are caring for. Even if it seems "minor," it should be logged in a journal as a reference. Overtime, your journal will be your best friend. Writing something down is a great way to recall a moment or event in detail long after it happens. We may even believe we will remember everything, but it's impossible. Too much happens in a day, especially for someone who has a high level of care.
A Caregiver's job description is large and that includes creating a comfortable space, a pleasant atmosphere and to observe any changes - big or small. What may seem like a small change may in fact be critical for the person's overall health. Never shrug off or disregard anything out of the ordinary. If you note the changes along the way, it may be valuable information for a doctor or nurse or for the next Caregiver shift. You'll never look back with regret that you didn't keep a record. Your voice and opinion matters!
If you have a disagreement with a family member how your loved one is managing under your care and you can't resolve it, if it were me, I'd be calling the doctor's office to make the report and then ask how to be advised. Ultimately, if you are a primary or part time Caregiver, you have a responsibility to track someone's decline or progress, and report this to the appropriate party. I would never encourage you to go behind someone's back to make a report, but if you feel in your gut this is a concern, I would then take action. Our gut feeling usually signals us for a reason. Pay attention to your cues and then follow through.
I hope you are enjoying the sunshine and warmer weather. It feels so good to be outdoors again, that is for sure! Happy Spring!
~Some of my most recent Zentangle Inspired Art Caregiver Designs~
Caregiver's are a Beam of Light
Caregiver's Make the World Go 'Round
Caregiver's Sparkle
Psychadelic
The last design is one I started around the holidays last year and I put it away. I looked at it several times along the way and was inspired yesterday to complete it. Though it's not a Caregiver design persay, it is what I do to wind down at day's end some days, to find my peace and to relax. Find a creative outlet for yourself that you can do on your own. It will make a positive difference in your life. And by all means, have fun with  it and don't worry about perfection or the end result. Just have a good time and focus on what you're doing.
~Spring Ahead~
At last, the cold winter weather is leaving us and the warm, pleasant weather is emerging. It's so nice to open up the doors and windows to let some fresh air in while the sun is shining. I'm so thankful for the season change that allows us to be outdoors riding our bikes, taking a walk or a drive and visiting friends more often than when it's bitter cold.
Spring is a time for warm weather activities. It allows us to expand our horizons physically in a much broader way due to the weather change and daylight lasting longer. A surge of energy comes from the sunshine. Oh to see the wonder of flowers in bloom and leaves on the trees, so beautiful. Be sure to turn your clocks ahead this weekend.
If you're short on time to take a day off or go away for the weekend, find a few minutes to walk outside, take a short drive or stop at a friend's home on your way to or from work. The main goal is to make some time for yourself and do something outside. Sometimes it's fun to visit a greenhouse just to look at all the pretty flowers. That doesn't cost a dime. Sitting on a porch is a great way to get some fresh air and see the landscape.
The year is still young and there's still time to join a class in the morning or the evening, grow a garden, take up a hobby, create something from Michaels or learn Zentangle. Zentangle is my thing. I also like to practice my handwriting with my non-dominant hand for 20-30 minutes 3-4 times a week. When I first started doing this my handwriting looked like an old persons. I've practiced over the last six years and now it's very legible. This discipline is good for me. I have to write much slower than my dominant hand to be able to read it. I am also exercising my brain this way with an activity that stimulates different parts of it. It took a lot of practice for me to get to where I am today. It also took a lot of determination. The benefits I get from this are so great and it's something I do enjoy and can do by myself.
Whatever you do for yourself, make sure you enjoy it!
